Originally from a small town in northeastern Ohio, John was eventually drawn elsewhere in the pursuit of self-actualization. What began as a creative background slowly shifted into the technical; John’s early interest in art led him to learn design, fabrication, and manufacturing techniques while attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He applied his creative, mechanical, and critical thinking skills in various industries including fine art, orthotics, furniture and interior design, construction, etc. before arriving in his current position at Electric Bike Report. Bikes have been present to varying degrees throughout John’s life; as a teenager, he spent much of his free time on a Diamondback BMX, and during/following the pandemic, a secondhand Specialized trail bike offered a way to blow off steam. Writing has been similarly ubiquitous; a natural skill with the written word developed through formal education into a source of pride and passion. Like a massive container ship in a small harbor, Lectric seemingly can’t help but make waves. For good reason, too! The brand largely dominates the American e-bike market due to its commitment to quality, value, and affordability.

Case in point: at the time the original XP Trike was released, electric tricycles were tough to find for less than $2500. Lectric shook up the status quo by releasing a custom trike that undercut most of its competitors by $1k. Now, the XP Trike2 boasts a boatload of impressive upgrades and the same remarkably affordable price.

So what new things did Lectric manage to pack into the XP Trike’s successor? In addition to a redesigned (and, in our opinion, much better-looking) frame, the Trike2 features a suspension fork and seatpost, improved brakes, and a color display. It also offers turn signals, multiple color options, and a quieter motor.

Holy ship!

Clearly, the XP Trike2 has raised the bar again in terms of overall value, but real-world aspects such as comfort and performance are more important than a decked-out spec sheet. This is where our team of expert testers and reviewers comes into the picture.

Lectric XP 4 (500W) Review | Our Best Budget XPerience Yet?

The 4th generation of Lectric’s flagship folding e-bike is among its best to date. It’s packed with value, great performance, and a range of uncommon features for its price.

Throughout our history of testing and reviewing e-bikes, the $1,000 mark has generally been the point at which a bike’s cost and quality are balanced well enough to earn our recommendation. With a handful of exceptions, Lectric has largely dominated our list of approved affordable e-bikes, with the XP line of folding e-bikes leading the charge.

The original model of the XP propelled Lectric toward success; its popularity among RV enthusiasts and entry-level e-bikers formed the brand’s foundation. Lectric built upon that base with each new generation of the XP, and through a wide range of its other affordable models, to reach its current status as a titan in the industry.

The XP4 is the newest generation of the brand’s flagship. As with previous versions of the bike, it boasts a variety of upgrades and new features—along with a fully redesigned frame—all while maintaining its starting price of $999!

In addition to relatively standard features, such as a 500W rear hub motor and a modest 499-Wh battery, the bike includes a lengthy list of uncommon features for its price. These include a torque sensor, integrated turn signals, a custom color display, and a handful of trim elements that stood out as feeling better-than-average for a budget-friendly bike.

Lectric also offers an upgraded version of the XP4 with a 750W motor and 840-Wh battery, as well as a few other notable enhancements, though we’ll save that for a separate review.

Our team had the opportunity to test both versions of the bike at Lectric’s announcement event at the Grand Canyon, but we brought the XP4 back to our home base in Utah for a more thorough evaluation. This week’s e-bike news includes new model releases from both existing and new brands, as well as a major firmware update from Aventon.

In terms of new products, Velotric released its first electric trike, the aptly named Triker. It boasts a large battery, a powerful motor, and the brand’s SensorSwap feature.

Additionally, a newcomer to the e-bike industry, Amflow, released a killer eMTB called the PL Carbon Pro. The bike has made waves with its incredibly lightweight frame and its remarkably torquey mid-drive.

Finally, Aventon’s latest firmware update adds three new features to many of its e-bikes, including the ability to switch between torque and cadence sensing modes!

Electra Townie Go! S Review | A Cruiser Through and Through

A dozen years after entering the e-bike market with the original Townie Go!, Electra has introduced a new and improved version of the bike with some significant changes. In addition to a clean, contemporary step-thru frame design and a bevy of hi-tech features, the brand’s latest cruiser now comes equipped with a throttle!

Why is that such a big deal?

As a subsidiary of Trek Bikes, one of the world’s largest analog and electric bike manufacturers, Electra’s e-bikes formerly followed its parent company’s ethos. Trek (and similar brands) have traditionally emphasized an active ride with pedal-assist-only e-bikes, so the Townie Go! S’s throttle marks somewhat of a change in perspective.

We love that throttles can help riders get moving after being stopped at an intersection (especially if one forgets to downshift) or take a break from pedaling. After all, riding an e-bike should be fun!

And fun is exactly where the Townie Go! S shines. The bike is decked out with tons of ride-enhancing features, including an approachable yet capable motor, integrated lights and turn signals, and a high-capacity, 3rd-party accessory-compatible MIK cargo rack.

It also pairs with the Trek Central app, a highly useful feature offering battery charging/life extension options, turn-by-turn navigation, the ability to customize motor output, and more!

We were extremely impressed with the Townie Go! S’s sleek new design (its four color options are bold and exciting) as well as its spec sheet, but hands-on experience and testing is the only true way to get a feel for an e-bike.

It’s another big week in the world of e-bike news!

Ride1Up took the spotlight this week with the release of the TrailRush, the brand’s first eMTB. Like its trekking e-bike, the Prodigy V2, the TrailRush features a 250W Brose mid-drive motor with 90 Nm of torque, a spec sheet chock full of great components, and a wallet-friendly price of around $2100.

The CPSC also announced a recall for approximately 24,000 e-bike batteries. The batteries, which pose a fire risk, were sold with cheap e-bikes through a variety of online retailers, including Walmart, Wish, Amazon, Wayfair, and others.

Additionally, the Texas-based e-bike company eBliss Global is planning to build a factory in Utica, New York. Once constructed, the brand has a goal of assembling 15,000 e-bikes annually in the US.

Here at Electric Bike Report, we test e-bikes and similar products from a wide variety of brands. Some companies have been producing e-bikes for decades, while others are relatively new to the scene.

Puckipuppy, a brand offering a variety of canine-themed fat tire e-bikes and trikes, is among the latter, having been established only a few years prior to this review. As such, the Labrador Pro was our first experience with the brand, but based on the high tally of requests we received from our readers to review it, the company was clearly making waves.

After looking closer, the reasoning was clear: the Labrador Pro is one of the most affordable full-suspension fat-tire e-bikes we’ve seen. At a time when the rising cost of living is straining budgets nationwide, we understand the appeal of an e-bike that promises a great balance of performance and price.

It’s easy to have some reservations when approaching budget-tier bikes, as their low cost must be accounted for somewhere. In the case of the Labrador Pro, we found some tradeoffs for the bike’s low price, but overall, we were impressed with its feel and performance.

In addition to having a comfortable ride, the bike’s motor provided ample assistance, resulting in an active yet leisurely experience in the saddle. Additionally, thanks in large part to its massive battery, the Labrador Pro proved to have excellent long-range capabilities; a perfect characteristic for an e-bike named after a retriever!

Buzz Bikes’ $1,399 E-Trike, Vida E+ Recall, Wireless E-Bike Charging? | TWR Ep 40

In this week’s e-bike news, we cover everything from new models to brand recalls and a new wireless charging option for your e-bike!

Following last week’s release of the uber-affordable Lectric XP Trike2, Buzz Bikes released an even lower-priced electric trike called the Cerana T2. This trike boasts a 500W mid-drive motor, a cargo basket with 71L of cargo volume, and a price tag of around $1400.

In other news, Giant Bicycles is recalling over 6,000 Momentum Vida E+ e-bikes due to a faulty steerer tube. Owners of affected bikes are encouraged to check their serial numbers and contact their dealer to schedule an inspection.

Additionally, a Dutch startup company called TILER has announced a new product that can charge e-bikes wirelessly through the combination of a floor-mounted charging station and a replacement kickstand. It’s a cool concept that’s similar to Apple’s MagSafe charging technology.

When discussing the two types of e-bike motors, the best mid-drive e-bikes and hub-drive e-bikes give riders a surprisingly different riding experience. With one, you only need to work as much as you want. With the other, you’re involved.

It’s a little more complicated than this, but I think it’s automatic vs. stick shift.

Most mid-drive motors use a torque sensor to judge when to turn the motor on and off. They also add an additional layer to the experience. By detecting how much pressure is on the pedals, they allow the motor to change how much it helps you pedal.

From the moment a rider pushes down on a pedal, the motor springs to life. Power addition and subtraction come in proportion to the rider’s effort. Furthermore, the proportion of power applied is determined by which PAS level the rider has selected.

While the experience of riding a mid-drive e-bike is natural and seamless, it also means that the rider is going to have to work harder to go faster. A Class 3 mid-drive e-bike, for example, won’t go 28 mph without the rider making some real effort.
